The Guadalupe Center’s Tutor Corps program seeks to expand the opportunities of low-income Immokalee students to ensure that they enter and complete their college studies so that they can become outstanding young leaders in the workforce and their communities.

The Challenges We Face:

Immokalee is a migrant community that’s primary industry is agriculture.  Like many agricultural communities, Immokalee is beset with many of the problems that contribute to low academic achievement, such as, high poverty, non-English speaking families, poor living conditions, seasonal work force, and low performing schools.

Tutor Corps: What We Do

Tutor Corps addresses these systemic problems by matching Corps members with successful mentors in the community, by giving Corps members the opportunity to mentor school aged youth in Guadalupe’s After-school and summer programs, by teaching Corps members how to successfully balance school and work, by furnishing members with college preparatory classes, by assisting members with college scholarships, and by providing continual support while away at college.

The Difference We Make:

For the past six years, 100% of Tutor Corps students have graduated from high school and were accepted to college.  93% of Corps members have gone on to college and 94% have successfully graduated.  Geoff Canada, founder and CEO of Harlem Children’s Zone, once said, “The only benchmark of success is college graduation.  That’s the only one: not how many kids you got in college but how many kids you got out.”
