KARLA RINCON
Graduate, Ohio State University, Class of 2011
In today’s society, the expectation for every individual is that of being successful. Success can be defined in many different ways but for my family, we define it with the ideal — perseverance. Perseverance for my family is striving against the odds in order to achieve one’s goals and aspirations. This mentality is what drove my parents to leave their hometown in central Mexico and to establish a new home in southwest Florida. The odds were certainly against my family, but through perseverance, my family was committed to giving me and my brother a better future.
I am now a proud college graduate from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Speech and Hearing. These accomplishments were possible because of the ideals my parents gave me which were reinforced throughout my time with the Guadalupe’s Tutor Corps program.
The time and dedication the Tutor Corps staff has spent on me as an individual is truly admirable and has had a tremendous impact in my life and in the lives of many other members who have completed the program. Their determination and perseverance to “break the cycle of poverty” and to help us students persevere against such incredible odds creates such a sense of self-confidence and gratitude in us that we are eager to succeed.
College graduation, while a huge accomplishment, is not my end goal. I am looking into obtaining my Masters in Psychology. As I prepare for more schooling, I am still living in Columbus, Ohio, where I am currently giving back to my community through my involvement with a ministry that feeds the poor.
